The Signs You’re In A Toxic Relationship & How To Break Free  By Coral Arvon, PhD / Adult counseling Aventura, FL Before you can get out of a toxic relationship, you have to admit you are in one. Recognize the red flags and the signs you’re in a toxic relationship by asking yourself these seven questions: 1 – Can you be yourself with your partner? 2 – Is your partner critical of you, constantly challenging your viewpoints? 3 – Are there equal amounts of “give and take” in your relationship? 4 – Do you share major values like integrity? 5 – Do you feel up or down around your partner? 6 – Do you feel like you are in a committed relationship? 7 – Do you feel good about yourself when you are with your partner? Relationships are an investment in yourself and your life. Depending on your answers to the above questions, you may want to consider whether you are making a good investment or not.  Eating Disorder  Eating disorders are severe and persistent disturbances of eating and eating behaviors. According to The National Association of Anorexia and Associated Disorders (ANAD), an estimated 30 million people in the United States suffer from an eating disorder. Although the basis of an eating disorder is usually not about food, it manifests as a person’s life feeling consumed by behaviors such as calorie counting, monitoring numbers on a scale, body checking, excessive exercise, or planning the next binge/purge episode. Dropping out from essential areas of life and becoming isolated from loved ones may feel reminiscent of an addiction or a toxic relationship. 3 Things People Worry About During The Holidays & How To Overcome Them Eat, drink, and be merry—that’s what we’re supposed to do over the holidays. And we’re usually awfully good (unfortunately) with the eating and drinking. It’s the “merry” we struggle with. Instead of good cheer, we’re often worrying about everything from “to do” lists to expanding bellies, the result of all those holiday buffets. Here are three key holiday worries and how to overcome them. Our guests at the Pritikin Longevity Center have used them to help keep mind, body, and waistline in tip-top shape all the way through January 1. Worry # 1: “I’m going to gain a lot of weight over the holidays.” What to do: During the holidays, and throughout the year, practice mindful eating. In the hubbub of holiday shopping and other frenzied activity, it’s easy to fall into the habit of grabbing food and inhaling it while getting other things done. Oh, what a mistake that is! Because we aren’t paying attention, the calori

Six Tips For A Healthier Mind

Six Tips For A Healthier Mind “I’m exercising every day and eating well, so I’m sure the weight will come off.” That’s what our guests at the Pritikin Longevity Center tell me, and certainly, they get amazing results for both their weight and overall health. But in my seminars at Pritikin, I remind our guests that there’s another important component to healthy living. It’s having a healthy mind. When we’re able to reduce the stress in our lives and cope with disturbing feelings, we’re often more successful at sustaining our healthy food and fitness habits, and we always feel happier. Here are six basic tips I teach at the Pritikin Longevity Center for developing a healthier mind : 1. Whittle down worry. Are your thoughts fueled by anxiety and “what ifs,” such as “What if I lose weight but then gain it all back?” or “What if my knee acts up and I can’t exercise?” Learning how to comfort oneself and calm down in the face of challenges is an antidote to worry and negative thoughts.
